Nobody forces you to buy the new campaigns, you can keep playing Prophecies for free, without a monthly payment, if you want to, or if you think the new campaigns aren't worth the money.
QFT....

This topic has been discussed ad nauseam.*

Hold on, wait, I bought a shirt last year for £4, and I've just put it on and realised that the monthly subscription on my red T-Shirt is is like 33p a month!

*wanders off to have a word with the manager at top shop*

[/irony]

Regardless. WoW = monthly fee; stop paying it and you can't play anymore. GW = No fee; don't buy chapter x and you can still play all chapters <x...

Ya, uhhuh. I'm paying 13.99USD/month.
But I got the 6 month package though, so it costs less than just subscribing for a single month.
Thanks to it, I will save about ten dollars for the purchase of Chapter 4.

as most of the above said you DONT have to pay to keep playing, it is your own choice to buy the expansion(stand-alone upgrades) of the game, your account will NOT be disabled simply because you dont buy the next game

If you spread the cost of any game you buy over a monthly basis, OBVIOUSLY it has a monthly fee. All games are pay to play, IDIOTS.

April 28, 2005 proph is released for 49.99

April 28, 2006 factions is released for 49.99

October 27, 2006 nightfall is released for 49.99

now the time between proph and factions is exactly one year *easy math yay :P*. so that made proph $4.17 dollars a month if u bought on release date and bought factions on release date.or about $0.14 cents a day not bad at all.

now we got factions wich was released on april the 28th till october the 27 wich is $8.33 dollars a month for factions or $0.27 cents a day.

im not gonna do the math on nightfall simpley cause chapter 4 is not out yet.but it has been said more then a dozen times each chapter will come out in 6 months. so for the majority of us guildwars cost 8 dollars a month. now some of you will have the argument "but i dont have to buy a new chapter to play an old one" wich is true but in each new chapter there are more then enough exclusive content wich improves older chapters. don't shoot the messenger
On the bright side, you might now elegible for that goverment subvention for your study at Academy of Lame Whine and Trolling you've always wanted.

If ever... EVER... anet decides to make this game a monthy fee 'just' because this topic keeps coming up, I'm bringing out all of my guns...

Please stop talking about something that uses poorly manipulated maths. WoW has a monthly fee AND you have to pay for the expansion. The difference here is that they're smart enough Not to make the link between expansions and fees.

Now I feel sorry for other GW players who have to listen to this.

Following your logic => Everygame that costs money has a monthly fee.

Which is of course, not true.

Because we was advertised to believe it was MMORPG before paying. However I enjoy in those games but once you finish story you use another character to complete storys or stop playing GW if PvP is not what you want only do after it.

Buying the expansions is up to you...

In prophecies you have the core characters, and if you want only to play with them (and prophecies campaing) there is no montly fee, and never was, I don't think that ANET will charge for monthly fee, ANET is just awesome.

If it was advertised as a MMORPG it would have also said there is no monthly fees. Just the initial purchase price and then...... nothing.

Otherwise, when I die and god gives me his invoice for my life, I might be a little light in the money department lol

Guild Wars IS pay-to-play subscription-based game... in some regions of the world, as I understand it. There's also an alternative payment plan, I believe, based on that system in place because of it. Considering I simply pay for the single price version, I don't remember much about it, but I do remember the topic coming up on occasion.

I'm not sure if it's monthly, or a packaged hour bundle. I think it's the latter, but it may be both.

*Edit: Note, I'm not willing to stake cash on the above. It's all hearsay, and I can't remember if I've ever seen anything official about any of it, though I'm pretty sure I did on the alternative payment structure for the hour bundles. Hmm. If I could only dig them up ><

As to the argument made in the OP, yes, it IS a gross inaccuracy to call it that. A monthly fee forces you to shell out cash to continue playing even what you already have. On TOP of what you pay for the game itself.

You can play Guild Wars Prophecies from the day of release to... indefinitely without paying anything more. It's completely optional to buy more. (Once again, talking about that specific payment style.)

Indeed. Pay for prophecies and no others. You aren't locked out of the content you own if you don't buy the new ones.
